Growing up, I had the luck to have contact with Judo. Judo is a Japanese martial art known for being a practice that teaches the student to go with the flow of the opponent’s movement, using their force against them. When I was a little kid, I had trouble concentrating and being present in other activities, but I remember that I could focus just fine when I walked into the dojo.

One of the activities that my teacher introduced us to that helped me with my concentration and understanding my mind better was meditation. We would sit in a crossed-leg position, close our eyes and focus on the senses. Maybe I could hear a dog bark far away or someone next door would cough and my attention would drift to the noise and gradually stray away looking to another stimulus to grip on.

This was a state of being present in the now not by deactivating or completely shutting down my mind but by simply being a witness to the going-on of the universe.

Like a person who spends time in the gym with the objective of developing a specific group of muscles, meditation helped me identify and observe my thoughts…
