Not that I am aware of. Most of the interviews are in Japanese, but the ones that I had access to that were translated to English reveals that this view that every character is a spirit has been commented on by Miyazaki when he said that in Japan people used to believe that everything is a spirit, even animals, minerals, air, everything!
